Lifespan’s School to Career programs encourage you to explore careers in health care and increase your awareness of available opportunities.

Young Doctors Club

The Young Doctors Club is a partnership between Rhode Island Hospital's internal medicine department and Roger Williams Middle School. Science teachers at the school and physicians in the medical and pediatric residency programs at Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital serve as program educators. This program empowers students by increasing their life sciences knowledge and providing information about building careers in health care.

Middle school students who complete the program take part in a ceremony similar to medical school graduation in which they receive their own white doctor’s coats and recite a pledge.

Groundhog Job Shadow Day

Usually held close to Groundhog Day, Groundhog Job Shadow Day is a program for students at Lifespan's partner schools. Each year, students spend a day in one of our hospitals shadowing health care professionals. This is a terrific opportunity for young people to gain greater knowledge of and awareness about health care careers.

  • Rhode Island Hospital
Groundhog Job Shadow at Rhode Island Hospital allows eighth graders from Roger Williams Middle School to spend a full day shadowing health care professionals to observe them in their departments, learning about all areas of health care.

  • The Miriam Hospital
Groundhog Job Shadow Day at The Miriam Hospital allows fifth graders from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School to visit The Miriam Hospital and tour the pharmacy, central sterilizing, dietary and nutrition departments, and the robotics lab.

  • Nurses Week Job Shadow
Students from Davies Career and Technical High School visit Rhode Island Hospital for a day to shadow nurses on various nursing units. Students get to see how their education applies to the workplace and learn the daily routines. This fun-filled day takes place in May during National Nurses Week.
